Landlubber wets his line to do the preposterous!!

Chapter 11 - the call of Peter kicks bass! I absolutely love the dialogue  recorded and not recorded between Jesus and Peter.  I enjoyed the meta narrative of catching fish, fish dying, catching people, people dying to self (I added this to Bailey's chapter - for some reason he didn't mention it) people receiving new life!

Bailey writes, "At the same time, Jesus is fishing from a fisherman's boat.  That is- he is engaged in catching people and as he does so he bestows new life.  Peter uses that boat to catch fish and in the process they die."

I am reminded and affirmed that all the "stuff" I have been given can be used to catch people and bestow new life to them and myself....or bestow death......to them and myself!  Ouch.

Fun side note about Peter's calling... he sits and listens to Jesus' teaching and then post miracle turns his life over to Jesus (Ok, I know- oversimplification of the text)  What did Jesus teach about that day??  What did Peter listen to?  NO record! Like I said, fun side note =)

Summary #3

3. "Jesus reaches out to Peter by asking for help, not by offering it.  He deliberately places himself in a position where he genuinely needs the help of the one he seeks to win to discipleship."

Sounds like Houseboat ministry!  We as staff must reach out to campers by asking for CAMPER help, not by offering it. "Hey can you help me with this line? With this tomato? With this flag?   We  then  deliberately places ourselves in a position where we genuinely need the help of the campers we seek to win to discipleship!

4. The help request is authentic, not fabricated.  Jesus needs Peter's boat and rowing skills, and Peter's worth is thereby affirmed on his own terms.  Jesus' ministry becomes a partnership with Peter.

Again, sounds like houseboat ministry!!! We need the youth pastors and campers in order to have camp. Houseboat ministry is a partnership between church and camp.

8. Peter told Jesus to "Depart from me."  Peter's attitude was clear: the unclean will defile the clean on contact.  Jesus had another view.  For Jesus the clean (Jesus) can purify the unclean (Peter). All that was needed was contact!

Read your Bibles people!!! (and drink your water!!! Preferably out of a glass rather than your God forsaken HUGE water bottles.

  1. Love the simplicity in the implication that being WITH Jesus grants us the beloved privilege to be LIKE Jesus!

  2. Humbled by the idea of deliberately placing ourselves in a position of need. How contrary is this to my constant desire to do it all on my own.
